Coltrane Plays the Blues

Christopher Raley

If God is savior, Coltrane plays the blues.
If a man is born to a mother
then his first tear is for a woman
and for a woman will be his last.

I’ve run this thing as long as I can
through days of drought and days of rain, thunder.
I spit at dust and choke in cloud. I ask:
How much longer? I hear only: Longer.

If Coltrane plays the blues, God is savior.
Let the frail heart of resignation
beat within the bones of mirth and sadness.
I can make no end.
