Askew and Aside

Crooked and tilted,
listing to port
time’s getting shorter
the Watchman reports

near tipping and wobbly,
the Timekeeper roams
laden with reasons
to lay by their tombs
to explain the withholding
of deeds un-assumed.

A curious errand
for the dead cannot hear, and
their tongues since made numb
by the reaper I fear
‘No thank you’s they’ll utter,
‘too late’ you have come
to express your devotion,
in poem or in song
any excuse you contrive
landing askew and aside
leaving only a fool
behind with his pride.
